Kara no Kyoukai: Mirai Fukuin movie recap

Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners - Recalled out Summer box cover art

- Recalled out Summer -

There's this girl who can see the future with one of her eyes... she knows everything that is about to happen, and knows that there's nothing anyone can do to change it... also the intro is some vague scene where Shiki comes to a parking lot looking for a bomber, and then an explosion occurs which Shiki can't fight off and the knife falls out of her hand...

At first, it sounds like a guy who is describing this... but later it turns out to be a girl at Reien Academy... This girl is leaving the school to visit her dad... She is aware of 2 different versions of herself, the one in the present and the one in the future... She feels like she has no agency whatsoever because of her power...

Then as she gets off the bus, she immediately has a vision about someone getting run over by a car... She tries calling out to that person, telling him not to go that way, but he won't listen... Just then, Mikiya Kokuto appears as a random curious stranger and gets in the middle of this dispute. He listens to the girl and then says he'll go and try to stop that guy from being in danger... then an explosion occurs at a nearby building... The girl is really confused by all of this stuff that is happening that she didn't see coming... Now she's just cowering in fear... Kokuto eventually comes back to her and says she was right, and that he barely managed to save that guy from the accident.

Seo Shizune introduces herself to Kokuto...

Next, you see some guy tinkering with bomb materials... It's that guy from the beginning... He also has the same power that Shizune has... his right eye sees his desired outcome, and his left eye sees exactly how to bring that outcome to fruition.

Next is a scene where Aozaki, Kokuto, and Shiki are at some fancy party.. Shiki is bored and goes outside... She sees someone and tells him it's dangerous over there... he walks away, and then an explosion occurs nearby...

The bomber guy thinks to himself...
How did that woman know something dangerous was going to happen at the hotel?
Later, Shiki is talking to Aozaki about this bomberman.. saying he seems to be able to plan ahead way too well.. she almost got killed by a bomb that she just happened to come across exactly when the timer finished... Aozaki says he might have the futuresight ability...

Back at the scene where Kokuto meets Shizune... She tells him about her power that she's had since she was a kid... She didn't understand what she was seeing back then, but now it's more clear... Kokuto sympathizes with her... There's this really sad flashback scene where Shizune sees her dog's dead body while at the same time the present version of the dog is happily greeting her...

The next day, the she found the dog's lifeless body.. but it was in a different location than what she envisioned...
I have to endure twice the sadness a normal person has to go through. And this man realized all that without my having to say it.
Meanwhile, Shiki is seeking out an old fortune teller called Mother Mifune... she finds her in a random alley... She sees right away that Shiki is a crazy murderer but isn't afraid of her at all, and even teases her...

Shizune explains that she can see about 3 days into the future, but sometimes her images don't come true until a month or even a year later...
Kokuto asks her if she's scared of seeing the future, or if she's scared about the fact that the future is set in stone... She says she's more scared of the latter... He says that's a relief, tells her that she shouldn't be scared of her ability and should use it more often to try to change the future... He explains to her what Aozaki told him about the futuresight ability...

The two kinds of futuresight are prediction and evaluation... Their predictive type basically works like advanced information processing... all visual data they take in is recorded and not thrown away... Their brain takes that information and shows them the results derived from that data.
They do not see the future minutes from now, but the results minutes from now which make reality.
The evaluative type os more dangerous for a criminal to have. Whereas prediction infers the future from your surroundings, evaluation builds the desired future.

Oh shit this is getting good... bomber guy calls Shiki, taunting her, saying he'll kill her from far away where he can't be connected to the crime. She isn't scared at all... she says he must be close by, because he needs his eyes to be on her in order to create the "set in stone" future that he wants... That's why his previous attempts at killing her from afar all failed... He is actually spying on her from a bridge with binoculars... a car blows up near her... he thinks she was caught in the blast, but she actually jumped away... She somehow is able to locate him and looks directly in his location...

He runs away, saying this is all part of his plan... and he lures her into that parking building that was in the intro scene. She destroys the explosion in his amazing scene with a demon-like look in her eyes... She somehow cuts the bomber's eye out from far away. She says he doesn't need that eye... says that if he had the prediction type power he might have actually been able to kill her.
There never was such a thing as the future. You can't interfere with something that doesn't exist. Prediction is seeing the possibility of a future coming to pass. On the other hand, evaluation is purging all possibilities and bringing to pass the future you see. It's a special ability that far surpasses prediction.

However... The future is invincible because it is formless. But give it form, and it's only natural that it can be broken. And your future was even clearer than the ridges on a screw. The moment you gave shape to the end of this, your future halted in its tracks.
Then back again at the scene where Shizune and Kokuto are at the coffee shop... she notices him look out the window to where Shiki is standing around... Shizune sees her, and sees a vision of Shiki eventually killing Kokuto... When she tells him this, he just calmly thanks her and says he'll try to stop that from happening...

Now it's over a decade into the future, and that bomber guy (Matsuri, who was just a teenager when Shiki cut his eye out), is now working for Shiki's yakuza gang and taking care of the boss's (Shiki's?) daughter, Mana... Mana is these really bright, confident girl who looks a lot like Tohsaka Rin (probably just cuz of the similar art style)... She treats Matsuri like her servant... Matsuri gets sent on some vague mission where he and Mana go to that alley to talk to Mother Mifune... Mifune admits she isn't able to see into the future anymore and is only doing this to try to help people...

I don't really follow what's going on at this point... Mana suggests something to Mitsuri, without exactly saying it because he can already tell what she wants... and she says he can do anything when he puts on those glasses...
Or should I call you Kuramitsu when you do that?
10 years ago... there was a boy who could see a future in which he succeeded, and thus could only abide by it. At some point, he became a slave to that future. He became a cold, mechanical bomberman. After setting off some bombs in a parking building, he was killed off by a certain cold-blooded murderer.
Kuramitsu is not of this world anymore.
Ryougi Mana introduces herself to the fortune teller... and that scene ends weirdly with them walking off, not explaining anything further... Mitsuri says he's not the protaganist anymore, but he can still play a minor role in helping this new protaganist...

Then it goes back to the past... it shows a scene where SHIKI (the male one) is walking around, and he comes across that fortune teller... She tells him he's going to die no matter what... but despite that, his dream will continue to live on.

What a weird ending... That last half hour of the movie seemed like it could've been a whole different movie's plot.
It would've been completely nonsensical if I hadn't watched all the previous movies first.
