Rin, Shirou, and Saber are now back safely at Shirou's home, planning their attack on the holy grail at Ryoudou Temple... Saber says she only has enough mana to unleash Excalibur one more time.
they get there, but aren't sure what to do... Shirou is about to just act without thinking and run in through the cursed muck.. then Gilgamesh approaches them... Saber can't help them because the fake Assassin has challenged her.
Gil explains that he wants to wipe out the humanity of this era, because there's too many of them, so their lives have little meaning now compared to the era he's from. Shirou goes to hold off Gil so that Rin can go through the goop and get to Shinji herself...
"You filthy sham, learn firsthand the difference between counterfeits and the real thing!"
meanwhile, Assassin, the Heroic Spirit Sasaki Koujiro, explains that he is not a normal servant, and that he is based off a fictional character who doesn't exist... he is merely a ghost who emerged solely to take the form of this servant, and he himself has no origin...
"I am empty, so all things are meaningless to me. However... If one thing could be said to give my existence meaning, it would be this moment."
the holy grail has already started spilling its guts...
"Those are wishes being drawn up by the holy grail... The true nature of you mongrels. The malevolence of humanity... To be able to grant any and all wishes... That is, to transcend the limitations of life, why is a wish not granted? That is because humans are inherently limited. Equality, peace, happiness... They are all the same. You, who are prisoners of your own flesh, will never be satisfied. That is why you humans constructed that Holy Grail. Not to be released from all suffering, but rather to conquer all suffering."
*laughs*
"But this is that ideal's end result. No desire to change the world is more powerful than human malevolence. But because it is fueled by malevolence, it uses self-annihilation as its means. That is your true nature."
... I just realized Gil's epiphany just now was the same as what that one bad guy from Kara no Kyoukai had...
oh man... a really creepy scene where Rin pulls Shinji out of the grail... and some disconnected arms come and try to grab her to get him back...
"I shouldn't be surprised that yanking out its heart angered it."
meanwhile at the battle...
"The moment I take a mongrel like you seriously, that is defeat in my eyes... And so... Rejoice. I shall not go all out against you."
Shirou realizes he can't defeat this noble phantasm with his sword skills... so the only other thing he can try doing is throw copies of all those same weapons back at him...
the battle gets interrupted when a part of the Grail comes out and starts heading toward Gil... wanting to take him as their new core... Gil produces a weapon that Shirou can't get a read on... some kind of rotating stick of light called the "Ea".. it's shockwave alone knocks Shirou away and injurs him.
Saber is locked in close combat with Assassin and can't retreat without getting hit by his deadly technique...
"Why do you hesitate? Just as I guard this gate, you guard something of your own."
Saber is forced to unsheath her excaliber to take him out.

Shirou: "Are these feelings fake just because they aren't my own? I musn't achieve that ideal, just because it's fake? No... I know that's not true. It doesn't matter that if it's fake, or an unattainable wish. I know that I can't save everyone. I know that no one can be saved without sacrifice! Even knowing that it was nothing but an ideal, I only kept chasing after it even harder. Even if I hurt one to save the many, I'll keep pursuing a happy future, where no one will be hurt..."
"And at the end of everything, this is where he ended up."
"Which means that I can do it. Even if it's borrowed, even if it's fake, I don't care. I'm okay with that. Emiya Shirou can keep this dream going! Even if he doesn't find a single thing he was searching for!"
This revalation Shirou has as he's reaching up towards the incarnation of hell... he envisions his version of unlimited blade works. Saber shows up to fight Gil in his place, but Shirou says "it's fine I can take him", and tells her to go after the grail instead.
"I was wrong... I don't create swords. There's only one thing I can do. And that's to give form to what's in my mind. My body is made of swords!
My blood is steal, my heart is glass.
I have emerged unvanquished from many battles.
Never have I been put to flight, but neither have I stood victorious.
Its bearer stands here alone, forging steel atop a hill of blades.
For that reason, my life has never needed meaning.
My body has been made of infinite swords!"

"Don't be surprised. Everything here is fake. However, there's nothing that says a fake can't rival the real thing."
meanwhile, Saber goes to where Rin and Shinji are... Rin used a command seal to keep her from coming into the cursed goop after her, because she isn't sure what that stuff would to if it touched a servant... Rin tries to act confident in being able to escape this goop on her own... but when the goop sucks Shinji back in with her trapped inside, she realizes there's nothing left she can do, except use her final command seal to tell Saber to destroy the grail...
just as Rin is apologizing to Saber with her last words... Archer suddenly returns and rains targeted projectiles onto the goop that has Rin/Shinji trapped...
that's right... Archer's class abilities let him guard Rin even when he's far, far away...
Rin and Shinji successfully escape, and then Rin puts the rest of her mana into the last tiny bit of her command seal...
meanwhile, Shirou explains how he can match up against, and exceed Gilgamesh... because Gil is not a warrior who has mastered any of the weapons he uses... he is just like Shirou in that way... It doesn't matter that Shirou's weapons are fakes.
Gil gets his arm chopped off... "I'll grant you this... You are powerful!"
Shirou is just about to finish off Gil... and then a he gets sucked into a hole left by the holy grail...
"Does it not know that a fellow Servant cannot be made its core?"
Gil has a chain tied to Shirou and is trying to pull him in it... Shirou declares he'll rip his own arm off if that's what it takes... Suddenly an attack from Archer stabs Gil in the forehead.
Rin manages to get to Archer before he completely vanishes... She says she's sad that no matter how much time passes, he will never be saved...
Archer: "Rin... Look after me. As you know, I'm a bit hopeless. Give me a shoulder to lean on."
"Okay... Got it. I'll try my best to make sure he doesn't end up a twisted jerk like you."
"Don't worry, Tohsaka, I'll try my best from now on, too."

Shirou is now living with Tohsaka and attending a magic academy as her follower... and they meet Rin's rival, Luvia, who is now also trying to hit on "Sherou"
later Rin takes Shirou out for a stroll because she noticed him making stuff that reminded her of Archer... she takes him to the grave of King Arthur... Rin gets to hang out with her "servant" all the time now, but Shirou's servant deceased in this era... some more hanging out and talking about life and how their ordeal with the Holy Grail War is nothing compared to the burden of comparing yourself to those who came before you...
what, suddenly Shirou is back in his old school with Issei? oh, it's showing when Rin asked him to go to attend Clock Tower with her...
At the end, it seems Shirou and Rin both end up quitting and leaving the academy... They have a speech where it seems like Shirou got his answer, and that Rin said as long as he manages to go up at least a little bit further than Archer in pursuing his ideals, he'll have defeated Archer's fate...
It ends with Archer admitting to himself... "But even still... I wasn't wrong".

OVA - Sunny Day
I remember this... it's the alternate ending where Rin manages to make another pact with Saber just as she's about to fade away... Rin, Shirou, and Saber all stay together in Fuyuki... the artwork in this episode is really nice
