Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru - 6 - Dawn of the Golden Witch recap

Ange meets up with Hachijo Tohya, a writer who has been creating forgeries of Maria's message in a bottle from Rokkenjima, and claims to know the full truth about it. Ange senses that this is different from what happened in the 4th game... Hachijo presents her newest forgery... "Dawn of the Golden Witch"
Whose piece am I this time?
Hachijo reveals her true form as a witch
In the past, I observed the Fragments through Battler's eyes. I want you to observe the Fragments that Beatrice has woven.
Now that he has succeeded the position of Game Master, Battler is not a suitable observer.
The Witch of Theatergoing, Featherine, just wanted Ange to read this newest bottled message to her. Ange and Featherine are observing this game on a higher plane than Battler, Bern, and Erika.

Battler is now using Beatrice as a piece... just like Sakutaro is a piece in Maria's game board.
That Beato was Battler's piece, and was supposed to be the same Beato.. however, since the real Beato was a lifeless Doll, this Beato took on the personality most desired by their master.

At the end of the first game, Bern mentioned that Beato exists as the incarnation of the rules. Battler intends to recreate the conditions that manifested the original Beato, so that this new doll Beato becomes the true Beatrice.
Battler's sin 6 years ago created Beatrice. Beatrice was his piece.

Featherine's forged stories have the same scent as Beato's, because she reached the truth just like Battler... Anyone who knows the truth can become an Endless Witch.

Featherine then invites the chick Beatrice to read the stories of the golden witch with her and Ange, so that she can become the golden witch that Battler wants her to be.

Beato wanders into the portrait of Beatrice, looking to find herself... she is surrounded in darkness... meets another version of herself with her hair down, and in a different outfit... This is before the portrait appeared. Beatrice owns the place at night. Kinzo is still trying to catch/revive her... she is powerless because of the shrine.
A result without an observer can possess an endless number of ways in which it might have occurred.
When people imagine that it was the result of a witch's prank... it is etched into the fragment as a fact... That's one of the foundations of magic. Decorating... the process. With magic, even a mass-produced stuffed animal can be reborn as a wonderful, unique stuffed animal filled with love. if you doubt it, it will be burnt by the anti-magic toxin. if you believe it, the magic will become the truth.

Ange accepts magic that is used for good, but denies all other kinds of magic. Therefore, the Beatrice who was called ruler of Rokkenjima's night, doesn't really exist. Beatrice isn't the name of a person, it's the name of a phenomenon.
That "environment in which a witch could exist" is what Beatrice is. However, can this argument be used to fight all the way through to October 5 1986?

Erika is now battling the Witch of Origins, and founder of Mariage Sorciere, Maria. Maria uses the red truth to say that her story about Beato giving her candy is true.
Knox's 9th: Observers are allowed to speak their personal viewpoints.
Erika tries to cut her down with the blue, saying that all the magic Maria witnessed was just a sleight of hand. Sakutaro appears and defends with blue, saying Beato's magic isn't proven to be a sleight of hand. Dlanor and her minions stop Erika from going any further, saying that her blue truth is effective, Erika has successfully denied Maria's illusion. there is no need to attack Maria any further.
Maria suddenly stopped crying, started cackling and saying her witch form cannot be defeated...

Shannon had recieved a gold butterfly brooch from Beatrice, in the hopes of creating love between her and George. Kanon broke it, and the two of them kept the two pieces. That had been the first moment that Beatrice, the witch of the forest, had met with a human and given them her power... bit by bit she had transformed into the ruler of the mansion at night... It eventually became possible for her to appear openly in front of Shannon.

The night that Shannon destroyed the mirror blocking Beatrice's power... Kumasawa describes it as "purple lightning smashed the shrine."
The evil spirits of Akujikishima hated spider webs, and so did Beatrice... hmm...
The old and young Beatos were listening to this, and tried it out. old Beato got burnt by the spider web, but new Beato didn't. They then went to test out the scorpion seal on Kinzo's study.
Those who research magic must have a refuge sealed off from both human and spiritual disturbances.
I am Beatrice. I was born for Battler's sake. I can't use magic, and I'm not sure if I'm a witch or not.
I am also Beatrice. I used magic to give Kinzo gold, and later became a soul and the formless witch that haunts this island.
It seems the new Beatrice is a witch that still possesses the body of a human.
The witch Beatrice that Kinzo sealed away, and the piece Beatrice that Battler created... together, they might form the true Beatrice.

No matter what kind of magic witches give out, it is dependent on whether the human side accepts it or not.
The power of belief becomes magic... and those who make others believe... are witches.
New Beato learns how to use magic for the first time... by doing the empty cup thing.
Old Beato uses gold truth:
You used magic to create a golden flower petal inside an overturned cup. It was a splendid bit of magic.
It may be viewed as a trick. It may also be believed to be magic... but that only explains one part of magic.

...huh? Featherine is saying that Battler didn't give birth to the piece Beatrice.. The old Beatrice did. Battler merely placed that piece on the game board. Only the original Beato, who created that piece, knows the reason for her dedication to Battler.

Shannon and Kanon had brought George and Jessica into Beatrice's game room... They joined the brooch together, and these 2 witches/demons manifested...
That's strange, there's nothing but humans and furniture here. Where is the witch that is capable of summoning us?
Zepar and Furfur... The 2 demons of love called Beatrice's name, and then the 2 Beatos appeared from a cyclone of gold butterflies.
The 2 pairs of lovers, who are cursed to have unsuccessful love unless a miracle occurs, must now face a trial in which only one miracle can occur.
If Shannon is to be with George, then Shannon must quit being a servant and leave the island... But Kanon will also quit if Shannon quits.
If Kanon is to be with Jessica, then he must stay as a servant living on the island with her.

Erika gets mad because Battler used his authority as game master to make all duct tape useless.. she then starts talking a bunch of random nonsense to Dlanor...
Without love it cannot be seen? It's actually the opposite. Because of love, you end up seeing things that don't even exist.
Erika battled Dlanor in a pretend game of proving whether or not they love each other. Erika claimed she was cheating on her and didn't really love her. Dlanor had to prove that wasn't the case. They could both use blue truth, but without the red truth, the game would always end up in a stalemate or in Erika winning. there was no way for Dlanor to win, regardless of what Dlanor's real truth was.

George's trial... he had to confront his mother about his engagement... he saw through Eva's intentions... and then Eva disappeared, and the witch Eva showed up in her stead. Eva had honestly and truly displayed her true nature in front of George.

Sun Wukong, who wanted to become a god, was crushed by the five mountains of fire, water, wood, metal, and earth, and sealed away. These are the five elements that the days of the week, Tuesday through Saturday, are named after in Japanese.

Eva had pushed George into extra schooling on Tuesday through Saturday.
George, the demon king, defeated Eva-Beatrice, and ordered Gap to bury her body in the VIP room on the 2nd floor of the mansion (wtf?)
Apparently this was all just within a game that the love demons prepared.

Jessica couldn't choose a piece to kill for the trial, so the roullette chose Kyrie. Jessica started explaining her situation to her, not sure what to do...

Suddunly Ange, watching the whole thing, started talking about her mom (Kyrie)'s relationship with Rudolph, and how Asumu was just another one of Rudolph's many charmers. Kyrie was his true partner all along. Kyrie tried to use her intelligence to stick out, but Asumu used the opposite strategy of being stupid to trigger Rudolph's protective instinct.

Kyrie was pregnant around the same time Asumu had Battler, but Kyrie's pregnancy ended in a stillborn.
Kyrie spoke of Asumu's death as a miracle...
You know, miracles only appear for those who can make them come true themselves.
The power of will that could make love be realized... Jessica gained the will to face the trial, then she turned into a demon and attacked a confused Kyrie...
Suddenly, Jessica was stabbed by Leviathan, the sister of Envy, who came to help Kyrie. But the demon power granted to Jessica was far greater. Kyrie's 18 years of envy was nothing compared to Jessica's envy for Shannon.. that was effective against Jessica's magic... for a while.
If you love the hell of envy so much, then burn in the flames of envy... for all time.

Kanon had to kill Rosa as part of his trial. Rosa talked about her own trial of love, having to pay back the debt she made to support Maria's father, who left them... Maria is only 9 years old, That's only half of the time that Kyrie had to suffer through a similar hell, so Rosa still holds out hope that she'll be able to get back together with him after she repays her debt.

Kanon kills Rosa easily without hesitation. Then Maria comes in attacks him, with Sakutaro in tow... Shannon suddenly appears and attacks Maria to complete her trial. Sakutaro can nullify offensive magic, but Shannon's magic is defensive. Maria and Sakutaro get pushed into the wall by her shield.
In Maria's dying breath, she cackles and says this is a perfect closed room murder, and that wannabe detective won't be able to deny the magic of witches now...

The young Beato also had taken the love trial for Battler's sake.. she chose Natsuhi as the target. Natsuhi's mirror repelled Beato away. She gets help from Battler's servant, Lucifer... Battler then joins in on the game... says he already took care of his sacrifice.

So, Hachijo Tohya's viewpoint is that the crimes at Rokkenjima were because of a trial of love started by demons. But still, Hachijo's tale does seem to have the same scent as Beatrice's tales.
If one has reached Beatrice's truth, they can create a new tale, whoever they are.
Now the first twilight has past... the 6th victim is still unknown... Rudolph and Kraus try to enter the room that's locked from the inside with a chain...
That room... all throughout this game there have been scenes of some unknown person locked in that room by some demon magic, unable to yell for help... They opened that room up and found... Battler's corpse...!?

Battler and Erika fought with the red and blue truth over the closed room murders of the first twilight. This time, Erika didn't make her detective proclamation, and acknowledged that she had an unfair advantage in the last game, and this time would fight on the same level that old Battler did with Beatrice.
Young Beato noticed that the two of them seemed to be having fun with each other, even though they were enemies.
The piece Erika starts suspecting the servants as the culprits.
Battler: Now I finally understand magic, so when this game ends, I'll be able to carry you off the game board.

Bern had Ange and the rest of Battler's family gruesomely killed over and over again, to spark revenge against Beato. She didn't want the witch side to lose calmly and elegantly like this, with all this stuff about love and promises.. she wanted Beato's truth to expose and humiliate her.

Bern restricts Erika from the detective authority, so that if she manages to win despite that, it will be a victory worthy of the witch of miracles.
A truth with no observers is the same as an illusion.
Erika tricked Battler into giving her some duct tape to create red truth with, as a way of evening out the odds.. She wasn't really at a disadvantage at all.

Meanwhile the love witches start the 2nd trial: Tear apart the two who are close.

Erika used 2 of the 3 rooms worth of duct tape seals to seal the 2 rooms that the remaining survivors (except herself) were staying in... this gave Dlanor permission to unsheath her red sword.
While Erika is roaming the mansion, a letter from the witch appears, addressed to Erika, saying that Battler's corpse has disappeared from the room it was in. Erika forgot to mention that she had already used up the first room worth of duct tape seals on that room.

The theme of this game... You can only have a magical result if it was something that could have been done without magic.
The 2 types of magic:
An illusion - a lie with no observers that takes place in a time/location without any anti-magic toxin. this kind of magic doesn't have to match a result.
True magic - a magical theory that matches a result.. only the unobserved process of the result can be transformed into magic.

It seems this game has reached the endgame even before the 2nd twilight... Erika checks the closed room that Battler was supposed to be in, and finds him not in there, just as the witch's letter told... if Battler can't come up with some logic to have him escape from that closed room without breaking the seal, then his game will end in a logic error, which will mean his immediate defeat.

So... THIS was what all those scenes were about... Battler trapped in that closed room by a demon, forbidden from removing the chain or calling for help... If Battler can find a way to escape from the room while Erika isn't looking, and keeping the chain lock in tact, then he can make a magical illusion of him changing into a gold butterfly and slipping out through the crack in the door.
Battler decides to take that chance... if this is a logic error, he will be eternally trapped in a hell where he has to constantly think of ways to escape the impossible closed room...

WOAHHHHH... Erika is actually the culprit in this game! The 6 corpses were all just playing dead in Battler's game to fool Erika, but she went and killed all of them herself, to corner Battler. This is not what I was expecting at all... insane...
That's why she couldn't make the detective proclamation.. Knox's 7th: It's forbidden for the detective to be the culprit.

For creating a logic error, Battler was sentenced to being eternally trapped in that closed room, having to think of a way to escape... Beato stayed by the side of game Battler, who now had an empty, doll-like expression.
Lambdadelta told Beato that her and Bern have both survived an ideal like this before. Beato promised Lambda that they would escape with absolute certainty...

Back at the love trial, the demons announce that Battler's pair has forfeited... and the remaining 2 must duel each other. Beato asks old Beato for help with Battler's predicament... but the "old Beato" who could solve those kinds of riddles is the completed form of these 2 Beatos.
The love demons say that the miracle of love can solve Battler's closed room trap... Ange doesn't understand how that's possible.

Bern grants Erika the permanent title of Witch of Truth. Erika then gets to marry the lifeless Battler, and become the new territory lord.
Gaap tries to save Battler, exposes a window on the other guest room that could have been unsealed at the time of the logic error, so someone from there could have saved Battler and took his place... But Dlanor temporarily denies it with the red, to prevent the wedding from being stopped. Bern and Lambda both realize a trick could be used to save him...
If that move is used, part of Beato's heart will be exposed.
It goes back to the love trial... Shannon defeats Kanon, and then the 2/3 subhumans that lost, joined their souls with Shannon so that Shannon could become a full human... Shkanontrice.

Beato, just before dissappearing, gives her love of Battler to old Beato...
From this day forward, you are no longer the Rokkenjima ghost that lives only to play pranks.
From this day forward, you will become the master of this island and wait for the day that he comes to fulfill his promise.
From this day forward, you will do this in my place.
From this day forward, you will no longer be me.
From this day forward, I will no longer be you.
Please forgive me for pushing all of my worries onto you, while I alone try to find happiness.
From this day forward, you have the right to hate everything.
From this day forward, you are the Golden Witch, Beatrice.
And one day... you will destroy everything, revive everything... you will bring blessings to all lovers...
With love, they will be able to see us...
Just as Kanon dies in the trial world, Kanon/Yoshiya in the guesthouse dies suddenly for no reason... and vanishes right in front of everyone.
Kanon/Beato talk to each other as spirits... Kanon agrees to go to the guest room and let Battler out... Since Kanon is no longer sealed in the guesthouse.. Beato can use her magic to switch him with Battler.

A witch is not one who solves puzzles.. a witch's job is to use magic to create insane puzzles that no one could understand.
It's about time they learned the true terror of the Golden Witch Beatrice, the one who can create endless closed room tricks of the most horrific kind, tricks that can make even the demons of hell prostrate themselves in shock!
Finally... Beato appears in front of Erika and Battler... puts on that troll grin.
...Did I keep you waiting? Furudo Erikaaa?! ...I'm here to celebraaaaaate!
A lovers duel between Beato and Erika began
Because of our arrogance in thinking that only one truth exists... whenever we find one truth, we have been blinded to all others... Thank you, Beatrice-san... I never thought... that I would learn, the true nature of this world from a witch.
Even after Erika learned to see multiple truths, Beatrice still defeated her, by denying Kanon's existence in the guest room with red truth.
Beatrice and Battler killed Erika once and for all.

That ending was so hype... I'm addicted to this now.
