This series has a lot of spoilers for the visual novel Fate/Stay Night, but it also can stand alone and it introduces the story and the concept of masters/servants and other magecraft stuff just as well as the VN does... I would still suggest reading through the entirety of F/SN before watching this series though.

Fate/Zero high session 1
A bunch of things happen in this first episode.
It shows when Ilyasviel was first born, in the Einzburn Castle hidden in the forest... Emiya Kiritsugu tells his wife Irisviel that he's worried about Ilya getting involved in the Holy Grail War...
Kirei is introduced, and is chosen as a participant in the next Holy Grail War... Kirei's father, a priest in charge of overseeing the war, is colluding with Tokiomi Tohsaka, another Holy Grail War participant.
Kariya Matou is introduced... He's a friend of Aoi Tohsaka, Tokiomi's wife, and her daughters Rin and Sakura... Kariya learns that Sakura has been adopted into the Matou family and his father is doing a bunch of horrible things to this girl to increase her magical powers... Kariya's father Zouken is obsessed with trying to win the Holy Grail, and Kariya tries to save Sakura by agreeing to take the worm injections and win the Holy Grail for him instead of using Sakura...
Two other mage characters introduced, Kayneth and Waver... Kayneth is a natural prodigy at magecraft, and acts really harsh and mean towards his student Waver who thinks that hard work and practice matters more than bloodline... Waver steals an artifact from Kayneth to try and summon a servant and prove him wrong...
Kirei summons his servant, Assassin. Then it shows Kiritsugu, Tokiomi, Kariya, and Waver each summoning their servants... Kiritsugu and Irisviel are introduced to Saber.
Kirei... he goes from one path to the next, never completing anything... Kiritsugu wonders what's driving this person and what his goals are...
Kiritsugu... he focuses on killing mages and nothing else... Kirei is puzzled by his actions... neither of them know what the other could want the Holy Grail for...

Episode 2
Waver's servant, Rider, is Iskander the Conquerer... He intends to conquer this era once he wins the grail. Saber is also having a hard time getting used to this new era, and she thinks Kiritsugu is a cold hearted jerk at first, until he sees him play with Ilya. She admits his goals are noble, even though his means are questionable...
The seventh participant of the Holy Grail War is revealed... Some deranged serial killer trying to summon a demon, ends up summoning the servant Caster. Kirei is the first to hear about this, and kicks off the Holy Grail War by having Assassin go to the Tohsaka house to try and kill Tokiomi, but Tokiomi's Archer servant, a character clad in shining gold armor, defeats Assassin like he's nothing...

Episode 3
Kirei, Tokiomi, and Risei show that they are still colluding... Kirei pretends to drop out of the Grail War since his servant was killed, but he Assassin that was killed was actually just one of many copies of his servant. Now he's using his Assassins to spy on everyone while remaining in the shadows, safe under the Church's protection.
Waver and Rider continue goofing off and not having any idea what they're doing... and Iris and Saber go on a tour around the city, which neither of them have been to before... there's some really good character development between these 2. Irisviel seeing the city for the first time reminds me of when Shirou took Ilya around the city...
Masters are forbidden from combating in the neutral church area, but Kiritsugu doesn't seem to care...
Later, Saber senses Lancer's aura and goes to fight him. Lancer's ability is "rule breaker"...

Episode 4
Lancer seems to be another chivalrous knight character like Saber... while they're battling, Kiritsugu is scouting around and finds Lancer's master and tries to snipe him, and he also finds Assassin, relaying the situation to Kirei and Tokiomi...
Lancer's master orders Lancer to use his two noble phantasms, and this reveals Lancer's identity to Saber... Lancer is about to defeat Saber, but then Rider and Waver show up in the middle of their battle.

This series is really good at describing the various servant classes...
Archer class comes with the skill "independent action", they don't rely on their masters as much as other servant classes do.
Rider, the most mobile servant class, wants to dive head first into battle...
Assassin, the servant that hides in the shadows most of the time...
Saber, the most powerful servant class who has a high magic resistance level...
Caster, the servant who can cast more powerful magic than any magi of the current era...
Berserker, the servant class with the highest defensive capabilities and has little to no weaknesses...
Lancer, the deadliest servant who can pierce any armor...
