This UBW series really is a great, faithful adaptation of the VN story... it has some new things added, but its storytelling style emulates the VN very well... While Fate/Zero was more like... Think of this in terms of Ryukishi07-style writing. Fate/Stay Night was the "question arc", and Fate/Zero was the "answer arc"... F/SN is designed to keep you in the dark about a lot of its plot details... mostly showing things from Shirou's perspective and teasing other perspectives once in a while... while F/Z was more about showing its story from multiple different perspectives, challenging the reader a lot less while still giving them a chance to figure the rest out on their own.
Episode 13
Archer is like the embodiment of Shirou taking his dad's old path (before he destroyed the holy grail)... the path of fighting to sacrificing a few to save the most people possible.
Archer ends up hating the human world after he becomes a heroic spirit...
"In the end, he continued to be betrayed by his ideal, even after death."
... omg this animation quality is phenomenal...
Archer: "Tohsaka Rin can believe in her own path right to the end."
Tohsaka asks him if he can...
Archer: "That question is meaningless. My "end" came and went long ago."
Rin plans to take on Caster herself. Her rule-breaker makes it too dangerous for Archer to fight her. She tells Archer to take care of Kuzuki..
Archer says that no mage is a match for Caster.. but Rin is confident she can take her down. She wants to save Saber and have Shirou rejoin the war.
meanwhile Shirou is already at Caster's hideout trying to save Saber.. not even fully healed from his wounds yet...
Rin: "If you didn't see his corpse, he's probably clinging to life somewhere."
Rin thinks Caster doesn't have a human shield now, and Kuzuki will be no match for Archer... so she'll be very easy to beat. Caster has more command spells left to get Saber to fight, and probably knows Shirou is there too...
Rin starts tossing tons of high powered gems at her... one of it gets passed her defenses to act as a distraction... wtf... Archer suddenly comes and knocks Rin down. He decides to ally with Caster?
"She's a woman who would tear apart her own younger brother to escape."
"Familiars that use dragon teeth as vessels are the hallmark of the King of Colchis's magecraft. His daughter, Princess Medea, was hailed as a witch without peer."
Archer asks Caster if she has enough spare mana to support another servant...
"The situation has changed. If Saber is under your control, isn't it only natural that I go over to the winning side?"
I sort of remember this from the VN I think? This was all part of Archer's plan to get back at his former self who cursed him with these ideals...
Rin loses Archer and is now helpless against the 3/4 of them.. Shirou then jumps in to save
her. Shirou is confident he can take down Kuzuki with his projection magic... even though he's not used to opening those circuits yet.
Archer then requests that Caster let the 2 non-masters stay alive, convincing her that they are no longer a threat. Archer then agrees that if they threaten Caster again, they will be shown no mercy.
Archer: "If you hate me, it is misplaced, Rin. This woman is the superior Master, that's all."
Rin starts yelling at Shirou for doing something so dangerous.. Shirou: "Well your hurting more than I am, aren't you"... Rin can't do anything but cry... later she asks him why he saved her... he shows her the pendant, and recognizes it as the same one that saved his life back then... he basically confesses to her.. and she goes full tsundere..

Rin and Shirou are having supper... Shirou tells her his reasoning for his ideals.. she agrees to still be his partner even though she's against continuing to fight. She knows she can't stop him anyway.
They come up with a plan to ally with Illyasviel, Berserker's master... Rin knows the Einzburn mansion's location due to her family ties...
Caster and Archer discuss plans.. they know the priest still has his trump card servant.. suddenly a flashback to Caster's previous master learning to steal mana from humans. She shows her master how to drain mana much more efficiently.
"How can you drain mana from an empty kiln?"
"Empty? Oh... So this appears empty to the eyes of you modern mages? Your mana-generating technique must be one step... No, one dimension removed from mine."
- she has like, 3rd eye/4th dimensional shit going on
"I have no need for incantations. To me, magic is simply something to command."
"Throwing away lives meaninglessly is unwise. As a mage, I cannot abide a workshop that generates such a loss."
her master uses a command spell to keep her from betraying him. then he goes to the priest... Caster is upset that he called her a witch.. just like everybody else..
"After all, this woman killed her romantic rival by burning her alive in her castle."
The master hands Kotomine a letter.. a contract selling the right to dispose of Caster. "If she agrees, I'll be rid of Caster without having to waste a Command Seal."
The master returns to find Caster burning down his workshop.. part of a ritual... she has found the place where the Greater Grail rests... a natural fortress that repels Servants.
he uses up both his command seals to get her to kill herself, but she already used the rule breaker to sever her pact with him.. he wasted his seals for nothing... he called her a witch, before she burned him alive inside a dark maze with weird wall paintings.. then Lancer shows up and... I guess ruins her plans to harvest her dead master's mana?
... and the twist... that was actually Caster's original master in the current grail war... that's why she remembers all this... after that, she was saved by Kuzuki and he formed a pact with her. Kuzuki agrees that she needs sacrifices to sustain herself, because he can't act as a proper master.
Illya wants to let them in... she knows about her family ties with Shirou...
Shinji has also come to talk with Illya, but they don't let him in... then Gil shows up... they recognize him as a king but still don't trust him.
"Shirou is coming here, to the castle where Mother once stayed."
Illya and Berserker show up just after he kills them..
"Shall we reenact the battle of legend here"

Shinji interrupts Gil and Berserker's battle to complement Gil's noble phantasms.
... the fight continues...
suddenly a flashback to when the holy grail told Illya about how she was betrayed by her father, Kiritsugu... and that she'll be able to kill her brother soon.
"After all, the Greater Grail's flame was not extinguished. The battle ended without resolution, so it will soon resume."
These Einzburn caretakers... "We are all nothing but tools to activate the Holy Grail."
Illy is the ultimate end goal of this holy grail project... "they will never be able to create one that surpasses you."
"If you are defeated, we will no longer have a purpose... The factory called the Einzburns... will abandon their millenial research."
"Even if we cannot be saved, we will finally be freed of our obligations."
Illya: "The Einzburn family... We never had identities of our own!"
The caretakers summoned Hercales for her.. but she doesn't trust that servant at first. Berserker then saves her when she gets attacked by wolves out in the woods..
"You've been protecting me of your own free will, haven't you?"
...
"Berserker won't lose to the likes of him."
Rin warns Shirou when they notice the fighting inside.. "If you want to save others... save yourself first, and then think about others."
Tohsaka struggles to hold Shirou back, as Gil destroys Berserker and attacks Illya...
a really sad scene...

Episode 16
Shirou foolishly stands up to Gil even after Shinji lets him go... Tohsaka then points an attack at Shinji to threaten Gil... not outright killing Shinji because her goal is to reason with him, not make him kill them before he himself dies.
Shinji tries to get Tohsaka to ally with him, she refuses and he orders Gil to kill them... but now Gil says they need to return or else Illya's heart will spoil...
Later, Rin is arguing with Shirou about his crazy ideals after they bury Illya..
Shirou: "Wanting to live your life for others... can't be wrong."
now that Shirou has witnessed Gilgamesh's noble phantasms, and survived... he'll now be able to project copies of them as well when his circuits heal...
The treasury that housed all of the weapons Gilgamesh owned in his life.. is his Noble Phantasm..
Lancer shows up, and Rin and Shirou can't agree on which one of them should hold him off.. Tohsaka makes a good point, saying she can't support him with her spells if he engages, because she'll blow him away too..
Shirou is so braindead lol.. it's like he doesn't understand the concept of using strategy... Lancer says he's actually here to ally with them against Caster. He says this was an order from his master...
Lancer says he personally likes Shirou... but he hates Archer.
Archer anticipates when they're going to attack... Lancer says he can hold off Saber and Archer no problem... the fake Assassin will be a problem for him, but he can't leave Ryuudou Temple.
They get passed Archer... before going off to face Caster/Saber/Kuzuki... Tohsaka tells Shirou there's only one of those pendants... she got it from Archer... she assumed Archer just got it back for her... but if Shirou still has the one that saved him, then...
